If you are interested in Chinese calligraphy or painting, Liulichang could be a good choice you will not miss.

Liulichang is a famous culture street located outside Peace Door (和平门) in Beijing. In Qing dynasty, many provincial graduates lived nearby, who taking the imperial examination. For their convenience, there are lots of shops that sell the four treasures (文房四宝 including writing brush, ink, Xuan paper, ink stone), ancient books and antiques.

As a local Beijinger, I live two blocks away from Liulichang. I am familiar with everything in Liulichang, and I would like to recommend of some shops over there for you.

If you want to learn Chinese calligraphy, there are some shops where you can buy related tools and art works as follows:
Dai Yue Xuan Dai Yue Xuan (戴月轩), selling traditional writing brushes produced in Huzhou
Li Fushou (李福寿), being famous for painting ink brushes
Wu Wenkui (吴文魁), specializing in writing brushes
Yi De Ge (一得阁), the most well-known ink shop
Qing Mi Ge (清秘阁), the oldest and largest Xuan paper shop in Liulichang

Ji Gu Ge (汲古阁), a old store that copies and repairs antiques

Rong Bao Zhai (荣宝斋), specializing in wood-block printing (木版印刷)Kong Fang Zhai (孔芳斋), antiques store

Bao Cui Tang (宝翠堂), jewelry store

Besides, Changdian (厂甸) Temple Fair is held in Liulichang Street every Spring Festival, which is the largest and hottest fair in Beijing. It will open from Feb.14th to 18th and the business hours are 8:30-17:00 in 2010. It is free entry.

It is easy for you to go to You can take bus 7, 14, 15, 45, 66 and get off at the Liulichang stop or get to Peace Door (Hepingmen Station) by subway.
